Camera chains vs. neighborhood boutiques — where to actually drop a roll in Tokyo
If you're in Tokyo with film to develop, your first practical question is which counter you can walk up to without Japanese. The answer splits cleanly: the national camera chains (6 branches in our Tokyo set) accept rolls at any store with a simple order form — English signage in central districts; turnaround is 1–3 days and prices are flat. The neighborhood boutiques (27 independent labs) charge more, take more time, but are where you go for proper E-6, push processing, and high-resolution drum scans. The split below treats each route on its own terms.
National camera chains
6 branchesBring the roll, fill in a slip (most have an English version), pay at the counter. Standard service is C-41 colour with a basic scan; some branches accept B&W and 120 but check before you commit. Turnaround is typically 1–3 days; same-day on request at flagship branches.
Independent / boutique labs
27 labsWhere you go for proper E-6 (1 of the independents handle it), 120 medium format (2), push/pull processing, drum scans, or hand-processed B&W. Most will accept English orders if you have the basics ready: stock name, ISO, push/pull request, scan resolution. Some have English signage; others rely on the order slip alone.

- Write your order on paper before you go. Stock name (e.g. Portra 400), ISO if pushed, scan tier (standard or hi-res), and whether you want the negatives back. Most labs will key off this written note rather than spoken English.
- Cash works everywhere; cards do not. The chain branches take cards. Most independents are cash-only — bring enough yen for the visit.
- Pickup is in-person unless you arrange shipping. A few independents will mail scans by USB or download link to an overseas address for an extra fee; ask at drop-off, don't assume.
