120 Format

120 Medium Format Film Developing Labs

120 medium format film produces negatives roughly four times the area of a 35mm frame, translating into far more resolving power, smoother tonality and shallower depth-of-field rendering when paired with cameras like the Hasselblad 500-series, Mamiya 7, Pentax 67, Rolleiflex TLRs and the modern Fujifilm GF system. Most labs that run C-41 also handle 120 because the chemistry is identical, but pricing and scanning tiers are where the meaningful differences appear: some charge the same per-roll rate as 35mm, others charge more because a 120 roll yields 10–16 larger frames that each take longer to scan at high resolution. If you shoot 6×6, 6×7, 6×9 or 6×17, check scan resolution and whether panoramic frames require a surcharge. All labs listed below are confirmed to process 120 format film.

About 120 Format

120 Format Film Developing — What to Know

Why 120 negatives deserve better scans

A 6×6 120 frame is 56×56mm — about 3.8× the area of a 24×36mm 35mm frame. A 6×7 frame is roughly 4.5× larger. That extra real estate is the whole point of shooting medium format, but it only shows up in the final image if the lab scans at a resolution that resolves the detail the film captured. A 3000px scan of a 6×6 negative is equivalent to roughly a 1500px scan of 35mm — technically sharp, but wasteful of the format.

Frame counts, formats, and pricing

  • 6×4.5 (645): 15–16 frames per roll — the most economical medium-format aspect.
  • 6×6: 12 frames — the Hasselblad/Rolleiflex classic.
  • 6×7: 10 frames — Mamiya 7, Pentax 67; near-ideal for 8×10 prints.
  • 6×9 / 6×12 / 6×17: 8 or fewer frames — panoramic cameras; many labs charge a surcharge for scanning these because they don't fit the standard film carrier.

What to look for in a 120-capable lab

Check that the lab's Hi-Res Default scan tier for 120 gives you at least 4000–5000px on the long edge for a 6×6 or 6×7 frame — anything less and you're leaving resolution on the cutting room floor. Also confirm they can handle panoramic frames if you shoot a 6×17, and that they don't crop the edges of a 6×6 frame to a 6×4.5 aspect by default. Our complete film developing guide covers format-specific considerations in more depth, and how to choose a film lab goes through the whole vetting checklist.
